System Administration Services
Unix system administration is viewed by many as a "Black Art."
Distributed Computing Systems (DCS) can help you by doing initial installations of Solaris
systems and help train your staff to administer your system. If your company has a
dedicated Internet connection, much of this work can be done remotely by our staff.
- Distributed System Design and System Installation
- By gathering your system requirements, we will be able to determine what your system
requirements are which best meet your business needs. Whether it is an Intranetworking
or Internetworking
solution your company is looking for. We help you from start to finish, and when you
need extra capacity, we can help your system grow to meet your company's needs.
-
- User Administration
- This entails not just adding and deleting users, but also making sure the user has
access to information and data required in order to be effective and productive in their
job. It also means answering user questions, and assisting them when they encounter
problems. This can be done either on-site or through phone support.

- E-Mail Administration
- E-mail
administration on a Unix system is probably one of the most complicated pieces of
software. It must be configured correctly, and work with the system's naming
service, as well as external naming services. The internet uses e-mail standards
which are supported by every Unix system. E-mail over the internet uses Simple
Mail Transfer Protocol or (SMTP). In order to
be able to send and receive e-mail to the outside world, the e-mail software, generally a
program called "sendmail".
-
- By using either central or distributed e-mail servers, client machines can have easy
access to e-mail using numerous software packages which are freely available. One
example of this would be Netscape Communicator, which has an email client built in.
Using these mail servers, even people who are travelling could be able to access their
electronic mail while they are "on the road."
-
- Performance Analysis, Tuning and Capacity Planning
- By using various tools included on the system and collecting performance data over a
period of time statistics can be collected to determine if your system is performing
adequately. Determinations can be made as to whether your system needs to be
upgraded. Upgrades might take the form of additional processor capacity, additional
memory or disk capacity
-
- Some of these reports of performance data can also be automated and sent to you via
email or may be viewed through a standard web browser.
